[In 1999 the talent agency Johnny and Associates Inc. introduced a new singing group called Arashi (lit. means "Storm" in japanese). The group consisted of five talented young boys named Satoshi Ohno, Sho Sakurai, Masaki Aiba, Kazunari Ninomiya, and Jun Matsumoto. The group made a name for themselves not only in japan but also in Asia and some parts of the world. they covered various pop music genres such as R&B and hiphop.]

Their debut single entitled "Arashi" was a hit and Japan used their song as the official theme song for the 8th Volleyball World Cup. They gained more popularity when their single became a major hit, selling more than half a million copies during its first week of release. By the year 2000, three of their singles, "Typhoon Generation", "Sunrise Nippon/Horizon",and "Kansha Kangeki Ame Arashi", debuted in the top 5 list of the Oricon charts. Arashi also held an Asian tour performing in countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Hong Kong.
The group also had TV acting ventures. They starred in short series entitled "V no Arashi" which centered around the game of volleyball because of the recent support of the group for the WorldVolleyball Cup. Jun matsumoto also starred in various dramas like Hana Yori Dango in which the theme song "Wish" was sung by the group. Matsumoto also starred in the drama, Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo and their single "Jidai" was used in the said drama and it earned the title of the Best Theme Song on the 30th Television Drama Academy Awards. Matsumoto also starred in the live action adaptation of Gokusen. Member Kazunari Ninomiya was the first talent from Johnny'sto debut in Hollywood as he starred together with fellow Japanese award-nominated actor Ken Watanabe in the movie, Letters from IwoJima in 2006. Sakurai played a man who is striving to be a good nursery teacher in the drama Yoiko no Mikata. He also starred in the live action film of Honey and Clover; though not in the main role. Aiba also starred in several motion pictures such as Pikanchi Life is Hard Dakedo Happy, Mukodono and Yankee Boku ni Kaeru. Aiba's first major role came in the TV series My Girl which started last October 2009.

Now, ten years after their rise in popularity, Arashi released two double A-side singles entitled "Believe/Kumorinochi Kaisei" and "Ashita no Kioku/Crazy Moon:Kimi wa Muteki" which sold over 500,000 copies in its first week making them the first artists to have two consecutive singles hit the 500,000 mark on the first week of release. They also released DVD of their live tour in Asia which was out last March. They also released a greatest hits album entitled "All the Best! 1999-2009" together with a collection of their music videos.
